The ancient Norwegian poem The Dream Song of Olaf Åsteson in an excellent translation made by the English painter and writer Eleanor C. Merry (1873-1956). Merry’s translation is based on the old Norwegian version that was carefully collected in the southern Norwegian Telemark region by musician and folklorist Olea Crøger (1801-1855) and Magnus Brostrup Landstad (1802-1880) and published in the book Norske folkeviser (1853). Landstad had cooperated with historian P.A. Munch (1810-1863) and linguist Ivar Aasen (1813-1896) to create the book. Merry’s English translation was created with the help of Norwegian-German translator Eric Trummler and the talented Norwegian/Danish-English translator, writer and poet Miss E. M. Smith-Dampier.
