The beauty of language is that it can’t be stripped of its human, unpredictable, flawed, emotional, dynamic, local, temporary and irrational elements. Language is always moving, it’s never the same in any time or place. New words are born each day, and old ones silently die in forgotten places.
The IT and software companies I’ve worked for have been trying their best to contain the beast that is language but they fail each time. I brought languages and technology as close as the two could possibly get, but in the end they avoid each other the way equal magnetic poles repel.
Here’s to the poets, the translators, the editors and the writers who use words, grammar, syntax, style and phonetics as their ephemeral, intangible tools to create.
Here’s to human nature that won’t ever allow itself to be truly rationalized.
