Disappearing Books

Books go extinct when they are out of print, rights fall into unknown hands, there are no digital editions, libraries worldwide do not or will not provide them and second-hand editions are sold out or disappearing (with rapidly increasing prices). Sometimes the last and only remaining trace is a footnote or citation in another book.

It is also common that an old book is out of print before “a new translation” is published, heavily edited in ways that make it impossible to compare to the original. This intellectual appropriation is done by publishers and scholars who add their own interpretations to the writings. Old knowledge subsequently disappears. There is only one way to respectfully revive old books out of print: facsimile.

Most of the disappearing books involve functional thought, which often contradicts mechanical, physicalist thought, which remains the dominant thought paradigm of our current age.
